Maanshan Environmental Protection Agency (MEPA) was established under Maanshan Municipal Government in October 1981. MEPA consists of 7 offices such as General Office, Office of Pollution Control, Office of Planning and Finance, Office of Environmental Impact Assessment, Office of Natural Conservation, Office for Administrative Examination and Approval and Office for Total Pollutant Control. MEPA has 5 public institutions such as Maanshan Environmental Monitoring Center, Maanshan Environmental Supervisory Department,Maanshan Environmental Publicity and Education Center, Maanshan Environmental Information Center (Maanshan Center for Environmental Assessment) and Maanshan Environmental Science Research Institute.
Since the late 1980s, Maanshan Environmental Protection Agency (MEPA) has strictly carried out the accountability for objectives of environmental protection, the quantitative appraisal system for integrated unban environmental treatment, the environmental impact assessment system, the "three simultaneous implementation" system, the deadline governance system of pollution and the pollution charge system, and launched environmental supervision as a pilot project, and finally with a successful result. Since 2002, based on the creation of the “National Model City for Environmental Protection”, MEPA has improved entire environmental function in Maanshan city, and consolidated environmental supervision and management, and sustained the relative stability of environmental quality of the city of Maanshan, as a result, MEPA has taken the lead in the quantitative assessment of integrated environmental treatment in Anhui province for over 90% rate of “good and moderate” ambient air quality and a stable 100% rate of reaching the standard for the quality of drinking water sources. In January 2006, China State Environmental Protection Administration (subsequently China Ministry of Environmental Protection) honoured Maanshan city with the "National Model City for Environmental Protection ", then the first in Anhui province, Central China and steel cities in China. Owing to its excellent work, Maanshan Environmental Protection Agency was honoured with the "Advanced Collective" title among environmental protection organizations in China by China State Environmental Protection Administration and China Ministry of Personnel, and also honoured with the "Model Organization" in Anhui province for 8 years in succession as well.
